The City of Duarte’s mission is to provide unmatched community services to make the City a great place to live, work and do business. Duarte is the City of Health, and the health of our community depends greatly on our ability to continue providing high-quality community services that are essential to all of our daily lives.
As previously reported, the City Council voted unanimously on June 25, 2019 to declare a fiscal emergency. This fiscal emergency was declared because key sources of revenue such as sales and property taxes are not keeping pace with the rising cost of maintaining service levels that keep Duarte a vibrant community.
While this action will not change the City’s current ability to deliver services that are used every day or impact residents in the day-to-day operation of the community, this step was an administrative step necessary one to strengthen the City’s financial future. With this year’s budget including a structural deficit of $1.2 million, which is anticipated to grow over the coming years, a long-term solution is needed soon to keep tax dollars in Duarte.
The City is working to protect services including public safety services, street and traffic improvements, maintenance of City property, parks and recreation programs, City department staffing and youth and senior activities. We’ve created an Ad Hoc Citizens Finance Committee made up of community representatives to evaluate Duarte’s long-term financial future.
The City continues to engage all community members on the current fiscal situation and potential solutions to secure Duarte’s future. For additional information on the City’s budget and the Ad Hoc Citizens’ Finance Committee, please visit www.duarteforall.com.
